Echocardiogram is 'ultrasound' of the heart. The technician applies non-sticky, clear jelly to the left side of the chest. Then applying gentle pressure with a probe on the chest wall, images of the heart are obtained in several views.
This test helps the physician evaluate the heart valves, heart muscle function, measure pressures in different parts of the heart, a look at the origin of Aorta (great vessel), lining of the heart (pericardium) and any birth defects of the heart.
